Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!, also known as Taiko no Tatsujin: Nintendo Switch Version! (Japanese: 太鼓の達人 Nintendo Switchば~じょん!, Taiko no Tatsujin: Nintendo Switch Bājon!) in Japan and Asia regions, is the first Taiko no Tatsujin game to be released on Nintendo Switch. It was released in Japan and Southeast Asia regions on July 19, 2018 and in North America and Europe on November 2, 2018.

Gameplay

The core gameplay of the game is the same as the recent Taiko no Tatsujin games released so far. Just like the DS and 3DS games, what set it apart from the others is that the detachable Joy-Cons on the Nintendo Switch can be used as a pair of air-bachi stick for an alternative control scheme.

Instead of playing the song with just Don and Katsu as performing characters, donder now has the choice of using other characters from Taiko no Tatsujin series as well as from other franchises as performing characters. Each performing characters has their on unique Performing Skill. The list of playable character aside from Don and Katsu are:

  • Currycutta Dondy (Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party Sandaime!) (Skill: drumroll and balloon notes support Lv.1)
  • Yomogimaru (Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party Sandaime!) (Skill: Reduced drainage on spirit gauge)
  • Squid (Splatoon) (Skills: Increased spirit gauge gain Lv. 1 plus reduced drainage on spirit gauge)

  • Shinkalion E5 Hayabusa (Shinkalion: the Animation) (Skill: No miss judgement) (Shinkalion DLC)

Also included in the game is the Party Game mode, which includes 20 mini-games with two difficulties. The game also includes the Don-Katsu Fight mode, a local 2-player multiplayer battle mode that was added on May 16, 2019 via update. The online-only Online Ranking Match Mode (Nintendo Switch Online subscription required), added on December 10, 2019 via update, put donders against other donders from around the globe in the real-time performance battles. The also-online-only eSports Tournament mode, added on August 19, 2020 via update, puts 4-8 donders going head to head against each other in a tournament.

The language of the game is automatically set based on the system language on one's Nintendo Switch console, the game will set in English if the console's system language is set to anything other than the supported languages. Note that the supported languages varies depends on the version of the game. The Japanese and Asia release of the game only has Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English languanges available, while North America and Europe release has English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

Trivia

  • Drum 'n' Fun! is notable to be the second Taiko no Tatsujin game on a Nintendo console to be released outside of Japan, following Don and Katsu's Space-time Adventure on Nintendo 3DS.
    • It is also the first Taiko no Tatsujin game on a Nintendo console to be released in English and Chinese languanges, something that only recent Taiko no Tatsujin games on the PlayStation consoles does.
  • Drum 'n' Fun! is so far, as of June 2019, the only Taiko no Tatsujin game to utilize motion control as one of the input options.
  • Drum 'n' Fun is currently the best selling game in the series, standing at more than 1 million copies as of July 2020.
  • The Cake Tower and Honeybee minigames have returned to the game from Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party Sandaime, but with more rhythm-based rules.
  • Despite the fact that Golden Don-Chan & Platinum Don-Chan are meant to be limited DLC Characters, donders in Europe regions can purchase them for free on the Bandai Namco Epic Rewards Store.
  • On November 6th, 2023, it was announced that sales of the game would be discontinued on November 30th, 2023, and the game would be delisted from the Nintendo Switch e-Shop the same day.
